  1. Analyze a canto from Dante’s Inferno (student choice; collaborative learning)

  2. Identify key themes in their chosen canto and connect them to larger book themes

  3. Create a 5-minute play to act out their canto (original writing and five direct lines)

  4. Public speaking: students explain their analysis by working in cooperative learning groups

FFW (5 min): What do you see?

Discussion Questions

  1. What themes do you see in this performance?

  2. How do they connect with themes in the overall text (name themes for both and explain their connection)

Instructions

Students work in cooperative learning groups to:

  1. Analyze a canto from Dante’s Inferno

  2. Identify key themes in their chosen canto and connect them to larger book themes

  3. Create a 5-minute play to act out their canto (original writing and five direct lines)

  4. Public speaking: students explain their analysis

Differentiation

Allowing students to choose which themes / topics they want to highlight in their canto; connecting writing tasks to students' prior knowledge and experiences; incorporating students' interests into performance.

Differentiating process activities: scaffolding, flexible grouping, varying the length of time for a student to master content, and encouraging an advanced learner to pursue a topic in greater depth.

Reflection: What are you most excited about regarding your play?
